Melissa McCarthy Responds to Rex Reed's 'Hippo,' 'Tractor-Sized' Insults

Actress Melissa McCarthy, best known for her roles in "Bridesmaids" and the hit TV sitcom "Mike and Molly," is making headlines after she responded to one film critic's harsh comments about her weight. Back in February, when McCarthy's movie "Identity Thief" was released in theaters, New York Observer film critic Rex Reed ripped the movie in his review.

However, what really struck a nerve with many were Reed's comments about McCarthy's weight. In his review, Reed described McCarthy as "tractor sized" and even referred to her as a "female hippo."

Despite complaints, Reed defended himself when he spoke out for the first time since writing his controversial review on WOR 710. Back in February, when on the air with WOR 710's Mark Simone, Reed responded to critics of his review by saying, “I object to using health issues like obesity as comedy talking points." Reed went on to explain, "I have too many friends that have died of obesity-related illnesses, heart problems and diabetes...I have helped people try to lose weight, and I don't find this to be the subject of a lot of humor."

Reed concluded by exclaiming on WOR 710, "Don't make me a villain…She's is crying all the way to the bank!" “Identity Thief” had a very strong opening weekend at the box office, bringing in $36.6 million.

So why is this incident making news months later? Well, because it has taken this long for McCarthy to respond. McCarthy spoke with the New York Times, giving what many consider to be a classy response. McCarthy responded to Reed's review by telling the newspaper, "I felt really bad for someone who is swimming in so much hate…I just thought, that's someone who's in a really bad spot, and I am in such a happy spot. I laugh my head off every day with my husband and my kids who are mooning me and singing me songs."
